A threat or not

Being a viral infection, symptoms are quite painfull. Symptoms may last for 2 weeks and joint pain is really a cause of worry. But as far as deaths are considered Chikungunya is rarely fatal. This infection possess low risk of death.

Chikungunya test

The evaluation of Chikungunya test is done in three different parts. Antigens and antibodies and IgM and IgG, their presence or absence has different interpretations.

Normal result

The absence of chikungunya antigen and IgM antibodies indicates that the person does not have chikungunya. The absence of IgG antibodies indicates that the person had no previous infection with the virus.

Abnormal result

The presence of Chikungunya antigen indicates
 acute chikungunya infection
2-5 days presence of chikungunya virus infection
Confirmation of the diagnosis of Chikungunya
Presence of Chikungunya IgM Antibodies acute chikungunya infection Recent infection of Chikungunya Confirmation of the diagnosis of Chikungunya

Presence of Chikungunya IgG Antibodies sign of past infection Helpful in the diagnosis of post-viral arthralgia of chikungunya (chronic joint pain usually associated with chikungunya)
Usually, a combination of chikungunya antigen and IgM antibody confirms chikungunya fever.

The presence of IgG antibodies usually helps to confirm a previous infection of chikungunya and the cause of the joint pain. Since there is no vaccine available for Chikungunya as of now, the only way to prevent the disease is to self-isolate the victim and timely diagnose the condition in the patient.

There is an RT-PCR test for Chikungunya. It can be done anytime from a day after the onset of fever. By the way, once it occurs, Chikungunya comes positive
